Rory's Well
Village Regeneration Program

Rory's Well has been working in rural Sierra Leone for over 6 years, focusing on the basics of life: clean water, food, health, livelihood and the environment.

We aim to provide villages in rural Sierra Leone the opportunity for a self sustaining future.
Working through local community led programs we facilitate major improvements in:
  • Health
  • Food Security
  • Nutrition
  • Livelihood
  • Environment
We aim to work in a way that is culturally, environmentally and economically sustainable, and to stimulate development that will continue without permanent outside intervention.
We have established a program of community led and controlled activities and projects.
We work co-operatively within the established community structures and agencies.
Our aim is that the program will be self managing and self sustaining - 365 days of the year - Every year!

Rory's Well Program demonstrated by the

implementation of "3 Villages project"

part of our 52 village program - May 2020

Rory’s Well has many projects transforming the lives of thousands of people in South East Sierra Leone but this project sums up everything about our community regeneration programme and values.
The 3 villages project as we call it actually involves 4 communities on the edge of Gola Forest with a total population of around 1,000 who were living, and dying, in very challenging circumstances with no clean water, insufficient nutritious food and little livelihood opportunities.

Clean Water For All
Getting clean water flowing is the first priority when we engage with a community and brings great joy and saves lives. Whether wells have been dug by us or refurbished, maintenance is the key and we are now keeping clean water flowing for tens of thousands of people!

After the basics of food and water, vocational training and education underpins the hope for a better future. Currently, we support vocational training for locals to get the necessary skills in our 'Oxford Uni Outreach' training base. We’ve had a fantastic grant from LUSH to expand our capacity to show what can be done in the Regenerative Agriculture and Agroforestry arena.
We link UK and SL schools for support and are also immensely proud of the new primary school that was developed in partnership
with DART International and Linguistica International who also sponsored a great video.

Demonstration Farm

Tree Nursery

Seed Orchard

In support of our “vocational training program” we have planted an Inga Alley Cropping demonstration farm showing how to grow food and cash crops between rows of Inga trees.
For each 1 hectare of permanent upland farmland, we plant 5,000 Inga trees. Inga seeds grown in our “orchards” are matured for 3 months in our “tree nursery” before planting.
Lush cosmetics donated funds to increase our capacity to 1,000,000 trees per year giving us the opportunity to grow trees for nutrition, livelihood and reforestation.

Our Bee Farming Program creates an income-generating opportunity for our villagers. Men, Women, Youths and the Environment are all benefiting from working harmoniously with Native Bees to produce natural honey and wax in and around the Gola Forest *In conjunction with our partner's Bees Abroad* farmers are trained in all aspects of bee farming and supported with beehives, tools and suits.  We have supported the formation of a "Bee Farmers Association" who purchase the honey and wax from the farmers and sell both locally and internationally.

Environment

Regeneration

Climate Change

Our long term goal is to replace ” slash and burn"  farming methods with regenerative agroforestry “Inga Alley Cropping” (IAC) and Inland Valley Swamp Farms (IVS) for over 6 million people in Sierra Leone.
Every hectare removed from slash and burn can stop up to 20 hectares of rain forest form being burned and saves 100's of tons of CO2 from being
emitted.
Every hectare of Agroforestry planted sequesters 100's of tons of CO2 within the 1,000's of Inga trees we plant.
