The story behind Rory's Well
Rory’s Well is a life giving project set up in memory of our son Rory Evans, who died in a car accident, just days after his 18th birthday in December 2013.
As a family, we were already supporting Alive & Well, a charity working in Sierra Leone with a mission to bring clean, safe drinking water to communities in desperate need. After Rory’s accident, we decided that we wanted to create something that was life-giving and positive to celebrate his life and so we created Rory’s Well. The response to Rory’s Well has been amazing and to date, over £300,000 has been raised in remembrance of Rory with over 75% coming through friends and family. We have been overwhelmed by the love, kindness and generosity of the many people who have donated, contributed and raised funds, through so many different events. |
This generosity has allowed us to do so much in the remote areas of Sierra Leone. As of January 2021, we are supporting clean water and sustainable farming in over 47 communities through our Village Regeneration Programme. We have dug or refurbished 40 new wells and are maintaining 85 existing ones, providing safe, clean water for over 50,000 people. We are supporting sustainable farming; through community swamp developments, women’s farming initiatives, bee farming and our new ‘Inga Alley Cropping’ permanent farms - offering nutrition and livelihood training, whilst helping villagers to support themselves and transferring skills for future independence. Alongside this, we have established and built a training centre to be used by locals for working and learning and we have recently built our first primary school for over 200 children.
We now have links with 10 UK schools and are supported and linked to 15 other charities and several universities and are proud to say that 95% of all our funds go directly to Sierra Leone.

Update September 2020
Sadly, on September 14th 2020, Tony Evans, father of Rory Evans, passed away after a short but peaceful fight with pancreatic cancer. His loss to us all has been immense but felt the strongest by a family who have already been through so much. Needless to say, Tony's last actions were to pass on his hopes and plans for future Rory's Well projects, of which there were so many... His strength, humour, creativity and perseverance are a hard act to follow but we are all so very proud to step up and carry on the good work in his name.
